Music Video StoryBoard Timeline

During the lesson today i created a music timeline at which i went through listening to the music and then split it into sections of the music. I then went along and put what i thought we would be doing in each of the sections. We might not follow this timeline, because we still need discuss which sections would look best with the visuals.

Feedback :)

Overall we got a good response to our Pitch ideas and are happy to continue with our concept.
Here are some Suggestions we got from our class that we are going to look into adding into our Music Video -

1) Use of different strands of narratives until the end for the conclusion.
2) Different Editing like having a story book that he opens and then edits into the music video.
3)A pied Piper effect where everyone joins in in the street
4) Don't rely on too many Gimmicks
5) also make sure it's not too repetitive and boring

Someone suggested we have a look at this Music Video to get a feel of the Bear doing quite human like movements -

Rough Magazine Advert For DVD

If this Video was a Success, we think that the Giant bear around london would become an icon and assosiation to the artist, which may well be used later in his other videos even if its only in the background or a snippit.

More ideas from the pitch

To create a strange world for our character in the video we would use a range of -
• Match on action
• split screens
• speed changes
• color editing
• stop motion.

Ideas and pitch :)

The Lyrics suggests that the main character is Mad – “You told them all I was crazy They cut off my legs now I'm an amputee, G*d damn you” – with this in mind we are planning to recreate the madness through costume and camera shots. Here our some of opur ideas -

• Our initial idea is to mix reality with idea that you never know if he is actually mad or if it is in his head – “I had visions, I was in them, I was looking into the mirror, To see a little bit clearer Rottenness and evil in me” at the start of the song we will show the lead singer looking into a mirror then changing into a giant bear (costume).

•We would then follow the character around London doing everyday things, like getting coffee, reading a newspaper on the underground, seeing the sights but still linking with the lyrics.

•The main idea is it to be a random video with subtle links back to the music and lyrics, we we’re inspire by this idea of craziness by videos from Fat boy slim which doesn’t make much sense but still keep you watching.
Random videos have always been a popluar and intresting type, here is an example -
Fatboy slim's Praise you

Flagpole Sitta by Harvey Dangerous

We realised that this song is bizzare and doesnt really make much sense, with this we decided that the video should be wierd and not make sense. with the lyrics "paranoia, kill my mind, looking into the mirror to see a little bit clearer" the concept that the main character doesnt really know who he is or doesnt like himself amde us link to ouyr later idea in the next blog.

Lyrics

I had visions, I was in them,
I was looking into the mirror
To see a little bit clearer
The rottenness and evil in me

Fingertips have memories,
Mine can't forget the curves of your body
And when I feel a bit naughty
I run it up the flagpole and see who salutes
(But no one ever does)

I'm not sick, but I'm not well
and I'm so hot 'cause I'm in hell

Been around the world and found
That only stupid people are breeding
The cretins cloning and feeding
And I don't even own a TV

Put me in the hospital for nerves
And then they had to commit me
You told them all I was crazy
They cut off my legs now I'm an amputee,
Goddamn you

I'm not sick, but I'm not well
And I'm so hot cause I'm in hell
I'm not sick, but I'm not well
And it's a sin, to live so well

I wanna publish 'zines
And rage against machines
I wanna pierce my tongue
It doesn't hurt, it feels fine
The trivial sublime
I'd like to turn off time
And kill my mind
You kill my mind
Mind...

Paranoia, paranoia
Everybody's comin' to get me
Just say you never met me
I'm runnin' underground with the moles
Diggin' holes
Hear the voices in my head
I swear to God it sounds like they're snoring
But if you're bored then you're boring
The agony and the irony, they're killing me, whoa!

I'm not sick, but I'm not well
And I'm so hot cause I'm in hellI'm not sick,
but I'm not wellAnd it's a sin to live this well

New Music Chioce

After exploring the differernt styles and conventions of our first three music choices, we came to a conclusion that we wanted a bit more of a challenge. Although 'Way back into love' is a good genre to choose it is also rather predictable, whereas Flagpole sita has more of a hidden meaning behind the lyrics and song itself. With this in mind we decided to change songs to explore more into a harder genre.

Chosen Song for Our pitch - Way Back Into Love

We have chosen Track 1 for our pitch as agreeing with our last blog it is a good typical love song that follows conventions.

Some of our ides -
  • Using a slit screen to show two different characters to show thier similaritioes and why they should get together in the end of the song - for example two different flats, a map each character has that when put together makes a heart. Prehaps showing how unlucky they have been in love before.

  • The next part of the video idea is having them walking around town and crossing paths but them not Knowing or realising. We'd do this by them passing in a coffee shop, be isles apart in a supermarket, walking on the other side of the road, him getting on a train and her waiting ofr one, she buying a DVD or book and him secound later going in to get the same one but it not being there. This idea would be as if they have always been right for each other but date never let them notice it.

  • An idea of stop motion involving prehaps teddybears getting closer and reaching out to hold each others paw, then to fade into a shot of them getting together at the end.

  • we want to use alot shots based on roads and paths, s the song is called waback into love, ad we think it should be based on finding the right route to love.

Choosing a Music for our Music Videos

we chose tracks 1, 4 and 8 as our songs for our pitch. We thought these would be good choice for our music videos as they are easier for us as an all girl group to relate and understand. two of the songs are relatively slow and lyrical which generally is a female convention for music. the lyrics tended to relate to things we could film as done in some popular videos today.

For example Tylor Swift's "you belong with me" uses Mis en scene to link with the music and the lyrics.

This video won an award at The MTV Music Awards, this goes to show its a popular genre even if it is cheesy and predictable.

DVD Album Cover analysis

Some of Her Costumes for her I AM Tour that reflect back to her Album cover.

This DVD album cover hits all the conventions of Beyonce's style. For example her outfit is very outrageous but yet glamorous which for her latest tour has been her theme. It also has her new signature mechanical hand that was so successful in Single Ladies Video. grey/silver colouring of the cover has a very sheek look to it that she brings to her apperence.

Music Video Analysis

Tinchy Stryder ft Amelle - Never Leave You

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AU-J6J8_Ytk
  • Genre characteristics- camera focus' on females bum and legs also a focus on Stryder's clothes, jewelery. Panning shots of the girl dancing.

  • The camera shots and choreography illustrate and link with the lyrics and music - "thank the lord daily" - where the rapper does the genuflecting. " Left out in the cold" dark and fog machine used. he also holds up a sign "new road" as he says bow street

  • Close ups of the girl and guy sininging with close ups on her body. "King here" - buildings appear to suggest he is the kingh of london, "very 1st time" hand symbols. There is always objects getting inbetween them gving the video irony that they are singing about never leaving each other but there are things stopping them.

  • Videos starts with him facing the back, which is repeated in all his videos, also he tends to use sunglasses in all his videos. there is also a tendency that he has a white of black background in his videos. this ceates a contrast with the long chain and his sunglasses.

Goodwin's Analysis of Music Video

  1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (e.g. stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band).
  2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
  3. There is a relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
  4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).
  5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
  6. There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc).
